Gary Alyward: October 4 – 30, 2014
Gary Aylward continues to astound with his latest paintings, depicting west coast imagery. Gary’s paintings of the energy found in nature, speak to deeply rooted themes that dominated historical art traditions – from the literal depictions of religious motifs during the renaissance to the fascination with the natural sublime during the enlightenment – Aylward presents a contemporary vision for west coast spirituality using the waves as a metaphor. Influenced by the techniques of renaissance painters, his work is built up with layers of paint and glaze, resulting in varying levels of translucence, superb balance of light and shadow, and a dizzying attention to detail. His intense focus elevates the subject matter beyond mere natural representation into a hyper-realized vision of life and the forces that shape it.
