New York based Canadian artist Suzy Taekyung Kim constantly seeks inspiration from nature in the midst of New York City. Her new series, “PEARLS ON THE RAINBOW FLOWERS,” visually celebrates the complex cluster of urban living and the vibrancy of life. Capturing the radiance that bursts from a blooming flower, she weaves the space with contrasting images of foliage, clouds, and pearls.
Kim’s paintings deftly blend the delicate and the strong by rendering images of flowers through an explosive use of bold ‘Superflat’ colouring – one of the central elements in this series which effectively illustrates the dichotomy of the urban versus the natural. Her new work places an emphasis on a more hard-edged pop abstraction with reserved textures, flat layers and shadow casting – elaborating on her previous success and expanding the visual vocabulary she developed working with world-renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
Through translating the beautiful frenetic intensity that occurs in a single blooming flower into contemporary visual language, Kim’s paintings create a parallel between the lives of flowers and our own, trying to bloom and grow through the cracks in the city streets.
She holds a double Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Colombia. In 2006, Kim completed her Master of Arts in Art Education with honours, graduating from the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University.
