With a focus on geometric abstraction, Dean’s illusionistic paintings celebrates a joyous full spectrum of colour. Colour acts as a focal point; each bold line and juxtaposing mark are saturated with rich hues, creating a vibrating language of harmony and dissonance between tones. From afar, Dean’s paintings appear as 3-D objects, challenging the viewer’s perspective and visual space. At proximity, it is a chromatic boost that uplifts and energizes the senses.
The spectrums Dean features in his painting are largely informed by the purity and saturation of light refractions passing through various glass, gemstones and other translucent substances. He captures the ethereal qualities of luminescence and translates it to physical and bold paintings using the hard-edge style.
Kristofir Dean holds a BFA from Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU). His paintings have been shown internationally, including Australia and Hong Kong. In addition to traditional painting, his work has been reproduced as a mural and banners with Vancouver’s South Granville BIA, and as a large mural commissioned by the Art Gallery of Hamilton. His artwork has been seen in publications such as The Georgia Straight, Apartment Therapy, the Article Lookbook and House and Home magazine.
“In all aspects of life, colour has great significance…identification, meaning and mood are all encoded in colour.” – Kristofir Dean
