GUEST ARTIST MARA KORKOLA
POP UP EXHIBITION: 10/10
June 15 – 25, 2024
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, June 15, 2-4pm.
Mara Korkola’s paintings come alive through her ability to capture both delicate and startling variations in light. Her paintings span the full range of our observable spectrum: plumbing the darkness of night to the lightness of a summer’s day. The nighttime Vancouver city scenes are executed using bright, pure colours surrounded by the deepest blacks. They are shimmering, twinkling studies of high contrast. The landscapes at dawn and dusk fall somewhere in-between, focusing on that fleeting moment when day fades to night or night becomes day.
Korkola has always painted her immediate surroundings, working from plein air and photographs of city neighbourhoods or Canada’s wilderness. While in British Columbia she spent her time hiking and photographing the ocean from the vantage point of the Gulf Islands to the rugged shores of Tofino situated on the western edge of British Columbia. Executed with a rich, tactile quality, these intimate landscapes, rendered in oil, captivate with their directness and palpable texture.
