EXHIBITION 1010
We are pleased to announce our new programming for 2020: EXHIBITION 1010. Running concurrently with our established solo exhibition programme, this new series of exhibitions opens the gallery to guest artists from across BC; it expands our support and promotion of Canadian based contemporary artists. EXHIBITION 1010 features 10 paintings for 10 days with an opening reception on the third Thursday of each month (opening reception cancelled due to COVID-19).

THE SUN IN GEMINI: a friendship in painting

The paintings of Vancouver artists Steve Fortier and Sarah Gee Miller may appear divergent, but their origins are remarkably similar. For both, colour is paramount: Fortier’s lush natural palette is balanced by Gee Miller’s vibrancy. Both begin their process on the computer. Fortier by painstakingly re-ordering and translating a pixelated photograph into a series of hues, and Gee Miller by translating fonts into geometric shapes. The initial approach is purely intellectual, studying, judging and editing before it gives way to the intuitive and physical act of painting onto panel.
For Fortier, how the viewer sees the image, its mutability, is central. The image, often from nature, is taken apart and reassembled in subtle changes in colour. There is an inherent duality in the way his paintings are perceived, as far-away clarity gives way to a dreamy, mysterious pixelated abstraction. Gee Miller also seeks a sense of calm and equilibrium in her paintings through careful arrangements of primary shapes. The result is a kind of utopian optimism countered by a cool, mathematical detachment. Emotion is hidden but not erased behind imposed order.
